“A few years ago, when my son was seven months old, he woke up very different. I looked at him in the morning and could tell right away that something was wrong. He couldn’t use his right hand or right leg. My husband and I took him to the hospital and had to wait a whole week for test results. We found out that our son had a stroke, and that he would have to undergo years of therapy to eat and maybe one day walk.
I spend much of my time with my son as he is slowly learning how to talk. Sometimes when I get stressed or sad, I call my mom and tell her that I wish I could do more for my son. She reminds me that it will all take time. So, I play with my kids. I go to the gym. Or I go to class four days a week, and this helps with the stress as it is doing something for me. Mostly, I stay positive. Someday, I would like to be a model and a nurse. Also, I like to write stories about my life.
The last story I wrote was called ‘I Champion My Son.’ He is doing better and better, but it can be hard because my daughter is doing things that my son can’t do. I want them both to be happy. I want my son to know that when he wants to do something that he can try. And if he can’t do it, then he can try more and more so that he can have the same kind of life as other kids.”
