Suddenly Summer

Well Blammo, it’s summer everyone.

That reminds me of “New, from Whammo!” Remember those ads every summer when we were kids? “It’s Super Elastic Bubble Plastic!” Some of us are too young for that memory, but summer has a way of creating very specific memories, probably because it’s a fleeting season; a magical world unto itself in some ways.

We’ve got some fun things planned as we ease into summer. Turn on all your senses and savor every minute, because we all know the drill. It will be State Fair time in a blink, so enjoy!

MontiArts Tees 2.0

The MontiArts tees we issued last year were such a hit we’re rolling out another edition, and the great news (artists) is that you can help design it! Using the source photo below, create and submit a digital masterpiece. (We have a transparent background copy we can email you.)

Keep in mind it will be printed on a black tee. The winner will receive two, yep— TWO free tees, and eternal bragging rights, as this 2.0 tee featuring our new downtown location is sure to become an instant classic right alongside the OG original.

Email your entry to the selection committee by June 30th to sue.montiarts@gmail.com

Stan Thorud’s Art Show Open!

If you missed the Opening don’t despair. You can still catch this jaw dropping show and meet Stan in person. During many of the open times he will be actually teaching classes, so just come in and look around. Stan will say hi when there’s a break in the action. Remember there are some originals and a number of prints available to purchase or order.

$100 Or Less Show Planned For September

Whatcha’ got, artists? This is an experimental show for regional artists. Think of it as a great chance to showcase smaller pieces and give people who might not normally be able to purchase original art to come away with something meaningful.

We’re still working out the details, but wanted to let you know it’s coming so you can prepare. Chalkfest will be Sept 9th & 10th this year, so there will likely be thousands of art lovers visiting downtown again. This could be a nice opportunity for some of you. If you want to sell during this busy weekend, plan to be available and on site, at least part of the time.

Another show to put on your radar: The Monticello Community Art Show Will be in October. Details coming. In the meantime— make art.

Instead of a June Open Mic

Open Studio Reminder

We are really are lucky to have such a beautiful space to meet and nourish our creativity in. Thank you Monticello Parks Arts & Rec Dept!

We host Open Studio here (213 W Broadway) every Tues from 10 to noon, and Wed nights from 6 to 9. Artists of all ages and skill levels bring in their materials and get creative in a room full of others doing the same; working on their own projects, and visit. It is a GREAT way to meet new art friends.

Cone Zone Survival Guide

Broadway has been partially closed. It’s going to reopen, only to close or partially close again farther down later this summer. Sidewalks will also be torn up at times in different areas. Walnut will be closed for a while south of Broadway. In short; getting around and parking this summer will at times be challenging. But there are ways to make it less frustrating for yourself.

We’re lucky to have gorgeous riverfront parks and a pedestrian underpass right nearby. Planning to incorporate a sultry stroll or relaxing bike ride into your visit is not a bad way to spend a summer evening. Try to save close parking spots to those who might need them more than you. that can include older folks, people with things to load/unload, people wrangling little kids, people rehabbing injuries or dealing with different abilities- some unseen. Give each other a break and choose kindness and patience.

Some good nearby parking options are the good old MontiArts Garage (and maybe the closed old post office next door?), and the 3rd street lot behind Cornerstone.
